The QuarkXPress 3.31 Updater updates your Macintosh (68k) QuarkXPress 3.3 application to version 3.31r2. The updater can be used to update each copy of QuarkXPress 3.3 (68K) registered to your organization. On America Online, it is available in the Quark Software Libraries > XTensions > QuarkXPress 3.31 Updater.

America Online QUARKTECH or TECHXPRESS
Using the Updater:
1. Make a duplicate copy of QuarkXPress 3.3 to update. This ensures that you will have another copy of QuarkXPress 3.3 if the updater is unsuccessful.
2. Disable all system extensions, control panels, and virus protection utilities. If you fail to complete this step, the updating may proceed without problems, but you may not be able to launch the updated version of QuarkXPress. If you want to use a virus utility to check the QuarkXPress 3.31 Patcher, do so first.
* System 6.x: Move any unnecessary INITs and CDEVs out of your System Folder and choose Restart from the Special menu.
* System 7.x: Choose Restart from the Special menu. Hold the Shift key down until the "Welcome to Macintosh. Extensions Off." message is displayed.
3. Double–click on the QuarkXPress 3.31 Updater icon.
4. Follow the instructions on your screen to complete the installation process.
5. When the updating process is complete, return your System to its normal configuration. Restart your Macintosh before attempting to launch QuarkXPress.
* Enable any disabled virus utilities.
* System 6.x: Return any INITs and CDEVs to your System Folder and choose Restart from the Special menu.
* System 7.x: Choose Restart from the Special menu. (Do not hold down the Shift key during restart.)
To verify the patch level of your QuarkXPress 3.31 application, launch QuarkXPress, open the QuarkXPress Environment Window by holding down the Option key while selecting About QuarkXPress from the Apple menu. After running the Updater, you should be at Patch Level 2.

The QuarkXPress 3.31 Updater provided in the archive will not automatically copy files from the XTension and PDF folders in the archive to the QuarkXPress folder on your hard drive. These files need to be copied manually. If you would like the QuarkXPress 3.31 Updater to copy these files automatically, copy the Updater, the PDF folder, the XTension folder, and the Release Notes (3.31) to a high density disk titled QuarkXPressx 3.31 Updater and activate the Updater from there.

QuarkXPress 3.31 Enhancements and Fixes
* Selecting New from the File menu creates a new document (in addition to selecting Document from the New submenu).
* First line indents will indent from any object that forces runaround; this is the way that first line indents worked in versions 3.1 and 3.2. (QuarkXPress 3.3 first line indents "always" indent from the edge of the text box or column.)
* Better compatibility with System 7.5.
* Improved performance of picture lookups on very large storage devices.
* Better tolerance for PDFs/PPDs that do not follow Adobe's exact specifications.
* Speed up of some networking operations.
* Better compatibility with AppleTalk Remote Access 2.0.
* Fixes various Apple Events scripting bugs.
* Improves self–diagnostics to verify the integrity of the QuarkXPress application.
* Fixed bug: Collect for Output failed to list spot plates used in an EPS when the color was not also used to colorize an element in QuarkXPress.
* Fixed bug: Documents on locked media could not be opened, resulting in a "Disk is write protected [–44]" message.
* Fixed bug: When printing a file as a composite, the output can differ from the Halftone Screen setting (Page Setup) after the first page. (See PS Printing Patch note below.)
* Fixed bug: When printing separations with Invert Image selected (Page Setup ––> Options), the knockout area behind EPS pictures could print at 100% (instead of 0%) on plates other than the one(s) on which the EPS file resides. (See PS Printing Patch note below.)

NOTE: PS Printing Patch (3.3) Users
The QuarkXPress 3.31 Updater permanently fixes the problems patched by the PS Printing Patch (3.3). After updating to QuarkXPress 3.31, the PS Printing Patch (3.3) will no longer be needed, and you may delete the file from your hard disk. (If you launch QuarkXPress 3.31 and the PS Printing Patch (3.3) is present, QuarkXPress 3.31 will not allow the PS Printing Patch to load.)

MacWorld, 2/95, p38: QuarkXPress 3.31r2 fixes conflicts between QXP 3.3 and System 7.5 when faxing or printing composites and halftones. Also a problem reading files on locked media with QXP. The 680x0 version is available online; the Power Mac version is available (with serial #) from Quark, 303/894–8888.
